According to the specs, the Kindle Fire has a brighter screen (obviously adjustable), however,
the Nexus 7 looks brighter if you were to put them side by side:

The Kindle fire is also visibly larger, and is 2cm wider than the Nexus 7, which makes it harder to slip into pockets or bags, also making it harder to hold.

The Nexus 7 also comes with a longer battery life, if you take good care of it of course.
